In the United States, human rights means “homo rights”. Secretary of State John Kerry today has announced the appointment of Randy Berry, the current US Consul General in Amsterdam, as a “Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBT Persons”. Nomen est omen? The man is said to be openly gay.
What must be concluded from this appointment is that for the US human rights are no more universal – i.e., that the human rights of people identifying as “LGBT persons” are of greater importance than the rights of everyone else.
The primordial task of the appointee will be “to overturn laws that criminalize consensual same-sex conduct in countries around the world”. It follows that the purpose of the unusual appointment is not to ensure a better protection of human rights that are universally recognized, but the imposition of a completely new “right” that is of more recent making: a Right to Sodomy.
Not clear how this peculiar human rights policy is going to impact the reputation of the US in other parts of the world.
