Lithuania: Social Democratic Prime Minister rejects attempt by party radicals to legalize same-sex “civil unions”

Lithuania’s  Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius says he’s against a bill submitted by a group of 9 parlamentarians, 5 of which are members of his own Social Democrat Party,  to legalize same-sex partnerships in the country.

“No. I have my opinion which I have expressed on numerous occasions. Thank you,” he told journalists on Wednesday when asked if he would back the proposal.

According to Butkevičius, the five Social Democratic signatures on the same-sex partnership bill do not reflect the position of the whole party.
