Romania: citizens’ initiative to protect marriage through constitutional amendment

RomainiaIn Romania a new citizens’ initiative has been launched to ensure the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman in the country’s constitutional law. The proposed amendment of art. 48 of the Constitution would replace the word “spouses” by “man and woman“, as follows:

“Art. 48: family
(1) A family is created through free marriage between a man and a woman, their equality and the right and duty of parents to ensure the upbringing, education and training of children.

If the initiative is endorsed by more than 500.000 citizens within 6 months, it will become the subject of a binding referendum.

Already in 2013 the proposed constitutional amendment was very close to being adopted by the necessary super-majority in the Romanian Parliament, but it was abandoned following the massive interventions of the US and several European governments. nevertheless it is believed that a very considerable majority of the Romanian population has strongly resented this interference from outside, and remains in strong opposition to the aburd idea of same-sex “marriages”.
