Today is Martin Schulz’s day of doom. The first results of the regional elections in the German land of North-Rhine-Westphalia are out, and it appears that the Social Democrats have suffered a spectacular defeat – precisely in Schulz’s home region (he is a native of Würselen near Aachen). If the short-lived Schulz-hype did not help the Social Democrats not even here, then there is absolutely no hope for them to win the federal elections in September. This is the third defeat in a series (after the elections in Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein) since Schulz was elected the Social Democrat’s new leader, and it was by far the worst of the three.
