The US Supreme Court has issued a 9-0 decision in the case of Fulton v. Philadelphia, in which it holds that the City of Philadelphia violated the First Amendment for refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services as a foster-care provider because of the agency’s unwillingness to certify same-sex couples as foster parents. This is a great victory not only for religious freedom, but also for the children concerned, whose right to grow up in a safe and healthy environment has been recognised. It coud also set an important precedent for European countries, especially the United Kingdom.
