Green MEP Helga Trüpel‘s party membership has been suspended after press reports about her having made “homophobic” ad hominem remarks against Jens Spahn, an openly homosexual politician from the conservative CDU. Apparently Mrs. Trüpel expressed concern over the possibility that Germany might soon be ruled by “that right-wing gay Mr. Spahn” if Merkel has to step down after her dramatic electoral defeat in September.
It is not clear yet whether Mrs. Trüpel will be allowed to retain her seat as an MEP.
If a right-wing, or even a moderately conservative, politician did that, there would probably be a criminal investigation, and calls for him to step down immediately. But not so in the case of Martin Schulz, the former President of the European Parliament, who as the newly-elected leader of the German Social Democrats aspires to replace Angela Merkel as Federal Chancellor after the national elections in September.
